Start Here to Get Your Permit and Drivers License
To get your permit, you must take a Drivers Education course designed for California and receive an official pink DMV certificate from the company offering the course. You must take the original pink certificate and birth certificate with you to take your permit test. A copy or downloaded copy will not be accepted. (Note: When you go to the DMV to take the permit test, make sure to take proof of a physical California residence; a post office box number is not accepted. For minors, this can be difficult. Most people get something from their school, or they go to the Social Security office and get a statement.)
In the past, you had to take Drivers Education in a classroom. There are still a few classroom courses but none in Lake County; you have to go to either Ukiah or Santa Rosa.
Today, on-line Drivers Education courses are the norm. They are much cheaper then classroom lessons and more convenient. There are many courses available for a wide range of prices.
Lake-Mendo Driving School recommends a course offered by DriverEdToGo. It is a very good affordable course.
One excellent feature of the DriverEdToGo course is the Audio Read Along (extra small charge) for people who may have reading problems.
It will probably take approximately 25-30 hours to finish the course. Allow yourself plenty of time to do the course.
