Hello to those 18 and older—this page is especially for you
If you have read the website, you know that it is directed to minors who are preparing for their drivers license. This is because the majority of people using driving schools are minors.
If you do not have a drivers license, then, just like minors, you must have a permit to practice. If you are in the drivers seat of a vehicle you need your permit and if you don’t, you can be cited; it’s the same as driving without a license.
- You can practice with someone 18 or older and they must have a valid California drivers license.
- Minors must hold their permit for six months and practice an extra 50 hours beyond their lessons. You do not. You practice and when you feel ready, you take the DMV road test.
While teaching in the Bay Area, I worked with many adults aged 18 to 75. Some were from the United States while many were from out of the country. I enjoyed meeting and teaching people from England, Ireland, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Sweden, China, Russia, India, Japan, and the Philippines.
Unfortunately, I have discovered that many adults do not realize just how much time and practice it takes to learn how to drive. It is not unusual for an inexperienced adult student to believe they can take a few lessons and then go get their drivers license. It just doesn’t work that way.
If you have driven in another country and are just looking for help with the California rules and way of doing things, then taking one or two lessons to review will probably be all you need.
However, if you are a novice, then you will need to practice, practice, practice. Driving is a complicated endeavor and you need to be prepared to be on the road driving alone. You should have at least 50 hours of practice to do your road test and to be out on the road by yourself.
